About MELA AI

What is MELA AI

We’re Violetta Bonenkamp and Dirk-Jan Bonenkamp.

We saw a problem in Malta. One of Europe’s highest obesity rates coexists with a restaurant culture that could naturally support vibrant health. The issue isn’t what Malta has. It’s that people don’t know where to find it, restaurants don’t know how to market it, and nobody’s connected the dots systematically.

So we built MELA AI. Malta’s Eating and Longevity Authority.

Violetta Bonenkamp

Violetta brings 20+ years of work experience across education, technology, business, and entrepreneurship.

She studied in Russia and across Europe, earning degrees in linguistics, child studies, and an MBA in management economics. She completed a European Master’s degree in Higher Education at universities in Norway, Finland, and Portugal. That’s not just credential stacking. That’s systematic learning about how people learn, how systems work, and how to build things that scale.

Before founding MELA AI, Violetta co-founded CADChain, a blockchain company protecting intellectual property for 3D design files. CADChain started as an idea and grew into a 25-person company with clients globally, government grants, and recognition from the OECD as one of 12 startups globally making an impact. That experience taught her how to build a company from zero, navigate complex technology, raise funding, and scale operations across multiple countries.

She also founded Fe/male Switch, an educational startup using game mechanics to teach entrepreneurship to women. Fe/male Switch attracted media attention across Europe and secured partnerships with universities and accelerators. The platform now has thousands of users learning startup fundamentals through play.

Violetta was named one of the Top 100 Women in Europe by EU Startups. She was nominated for Impact Person of the Year at Dutch Blockchain Week. She’s been accepted to Columbia University. She publishes regularly on startups and innovation.

But beyond credentials and recognition, here’s what matters for MELA AI: Violetta asks hard questions. She researches obsessively. She doesn’t accept conventional wisdom. And she builds things that work for real people in real markets.

For MELA AI, she’s bringing expertise in AI application, market research, business model design, and the ability to connect disparate domains (restaurants, nutrition, tourism, technology) into a coherent platform.

Dirk-Jan Bonenkamp

Dirk-Jan brings deep expertise in legal frameworks, intellectual property, business structuring, and the operational architecture that keeps companies running legally and efficiently.

He holds a Master’s degree in Law from Utrecht University. His career spans legal practice, intellectual property strategy, and business development across multiple jurisdictions.

At CADChain, Dirk-Jan served as Chief Legal Officer and co-founder. He built the legal framework for blockchain-based IP protection. He navigated the complex intersection of law, technology, and emerging applications. He handled everything from regulatory compliance to contract negotiation to structuring partnerships.

That experience matters more than it seems. When you’re building something new, legal clarity prevents disasters. Proper structuring creates efficiency. Understanding regulation helps you build compliant from the start instead of retrofitting later.

For MELA AI, Dirk-Jan ensures that:

He’s also deeply involved in restaurant partnerships, B2B agreements, and ensuring that what we promise to restaurants and customers actually works in practice.

Why We Started MELA AI

Malta sits at the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean diet ranks #1 in the world for health outcomes. Malta has one of the highest densities of restaurants per capita globally. Yet:

That gap represented opportunity. Not a business opportunity first—a genuine problem we could solve.

We believed:

Restaurants can be healthier without compromising excellence. Good restaurants don’t need deep fryers and excessive salt and added sugars to be great. Skill and technique matter more than shortcuts.

Diners want reliable information. People making choices about their health deserve to know what they’re getting. Transparent nutrition information, ingredient sourcing, cooking methods—these shouldn’t be secrets.

Small businesses need support. Malta’s restaurant industry isn’t dominated by chains. It’s owner-operated establishments often struggling with modern marketing and digital visibility. They deserve tools, platforms, and partnership.

Health matters. The choices people make about food cascade into everything: energy levels, mental clarity, disease prevention, longevity, quality of life. This isn’t abstract. It’s personal.

So we built MELA AI.

What We’ve Built

MELA Index Certification

A rigorous certification program for restaurants meeting health standards. Not perfect. Just committed. Just transparent. Just better.

Comprehensive Directory

All healthy restaurants in Malta in one place, organized by diet type, location, price, and specialties. Searchable. Filterable. Honest.

Original Content

Weekly articles about Mediterranean diet, seasonal eating, regional dining, tourist guides, nutrition education, and industry insights. Written by people who know what they’re talking about.

Free Tools

Restaurant owners get Google Business optimization checklists, SEO templates, marketing calendars, analytics dashboards. Diners get planning tools and decision frameworks. No paywalls. No tricks.

Local SEO Services

Restaurants can hire us to optimize their search visibility, manage their online presence, build their reputation, and reach customers looking for exactly what they offer.

Our Team

We’re a small team. That means we’re lean, responsive, and personally invested in what we build. We’re also deliberately small—we’d rather do one thing well than many things poorly.

We work with:

We also work with people in Malta’s restaurant community—owners, chefs, staff—who are navigating their own paths toward better health outcomes.

Our Values

Health First

Everything we do starts with: does this actually support human health? We’re not here to make health claims we can’t back up. We’re not here to sell snake oil. We’re here to connect people with restaurants and information that genuinely support living well.

Transparency

We tell restaurants what certification requires. We show diners what we know about restaurants. We’re honest about limitations. We correct errors quickly. We explain our reasoning.

Local Expertise

We’re not applying generic frameworks from somewhere else. We understand Malta. We work with local restaurant owners, local chefs, local health professionals, local tourism patterns. We leverage that knowledge.

Respect for Business

Restaurants are businesses. They need to make money. Our certification and listings exist to help restaurants make more money while maintaining health standards. We’re not anti-business. We’re pro-business that also respects health.

Respect for Choice

We guide. We inform. We certify. We don’t dictate. Diners choose where to eat. Restaurants choose their approach. We provide the information to make good choices.

Continuous Improvement

We don’t have all answers. We learn. We adapt. We update standards as research evolves. We fix what doesn’t work.

Looking Forward

Year one (2025) focused on establishing MELA Index certification, building the restaurant directory, and proving the model with early adopter restaurants.

Year two (2026) expands restaurant participation, adds more featured content, develops B2B services for restaurant marketing, and potentially expands into regional European markets.

Year three (2027) positions MELA as the definitive platform for health-conscious dining across the Mediterranean.

Beyond that? We’re open. Maybe we expand beyond restaurants. Maybe we partner with tourism boards. Maybe we develop AI tools that help restaurants optimize their menus. We’ll let what works guide us.
